In 2018, the brand Doritos sought to launch a chip specifically designed for women, called the “lady-crisp,” featuring a “woman-friendly crunch” that was less noisy. If the sound level of a chip plays a role in how we assign meaning to masculinity and femininity, what about the various expected acoustic choreographies aimed at conforming to sociocultural gender expectations? Sound Trouble is the result of research that explores how gender inequalities can be expressed in the realm of sound.
